Mandolin Tuner

Each mandolin course has two strings at the same pitch. Tune one string, then match its partner.

Flat—Sharp

Play one note at a time in a quiet room. A4 reference: 440 Hz.

The target is for each string in a course; two strings sounding together can confuse detection.

Understanding the result

Each target is the pitch for both strings in a G3 D4 A4 E5 course. Tune the pair separately, then listen for beating when they sound together.

How to use this tool

  1. Choose a course from G3 to E5.
  2. Pluck a single string and tune it.
  3. Repeat on the paired string.

Troubleshooting

  • Mute one string in the pair while tuning the other so two close pitches do not confuse detection.
  • Use small adjustments on the high E course and keep the microphone close enough for a stable note.

Browser and device limitations

The tuner detects one dominant pitch and cannot independently evaluate two strings sounding together.

Common questions

Why are there four targets for eight strings?

The strings are arranged in four pairs. Both strings in each pair share a note.

How do I check the pair?

Tune each string alone, then pluck both and listen for pulsing that suggests a mismatch.

What does pulsing between paired strings mean?

Audible beating usually means the two strings are close but not yet at the same frequency.
