Tone Generator

Choose a frequency, waveform and low volume before you start. This is useful for a basic speaker check or musical reference.

440Hz

Start with low volume. Very high and low tones may be inaudible on your speakers.

Sound is generated on your device. Avoid prolonged loud tones, especially through headphones.

Understanding the result

The audible signal uses the selected waveform, frequency and browser audio volume. Different waveforms sound different because their harmonic content differs.

How to use this tool

  1. Turn your device volume down.
  2. Choose a frequency and waveform.
  3. Start the tone and stop it when you have finished.

Troubleshooting

  • Lower system volume before starting, then check the active output device if no tone is audible.
  • Try a mid-range frequency such as 440 Hz because small speakers and human hearing may not reproduce extreme settings.

Browser and device limitations

Browser and speaker output is not calibrated, so this tool cannot measure hearing thresholds or equipment frequency response.

Common questions

Why can’t I hear a high frequency?

Hearing, speakers and audio settings all affect what you can hear. A silent tone alone cannot diagnose hearing or hardware.

Why does the sound change when I change waveform?

Sine, square, triangle and sawtooth waves contain different overtones even at the same fundamental frequency.

Is the displayed frequency calibrated?

It is the oscillator target inside the Web Audio API; the physical output still depends on the device and audio system.
